What to Look for in Marrakech Accommodation and Best Place to Stay in Marrakech

marrakech accommodation

Going to Marrakech, huh? Good choice! A city that enters under the skin, in the best way possible. But, finding an accommodation? Tougher than finding your way across the Djemaa el-Fna at dusk! Trust me, I have done it! Been there, and learned some very hard lessons along the way.

My first trip to Marrakech was pure IG aesthetic. Those riads, with beautiful courtyards, mosaic tiles, and plunge pools, are simply stunning! Looked great on the Internet, right? Booked some in Medina, thinking I was to be treated like a queen. What they never showed in any photos, the quiet buzz from the souks, the early morning calls to prayers (lovely, but at 5 am, much less so), and that my “luxurious” room was basically the size of a walk-in closet.

Lesson number one: never trust the pictures outright. Think about what you really want from your accommodation in Marrakech. Do you want peace and quiet? Or do you want to be right in the center? Will it be a solo trip, or a couple stays, or a family affair? These basic questions are key.

Location Matters the Most for Your Marrakech Accommodation

Medina is the center point of Marrakech where most of the traditional riads are located. Being there and being so lively, it can get a little congested and overwhelming, especially if you’re not used to it. If you want something quieter, you’re better off staying in the Gueliz or Hivernage districts. These are a bit more modern, with wider streets and cool cafés, and a mellow vibe. They say the soul of Marrakech exists in Medina; Gueliz is where its modern heart beats.

I recall staying in a riad somewhere down a tiny alleyway that offered a surreal impression. Getting to the place was somewhat like a maze. The number of times I got lost-I do not care to remember! Dragging a suitcase through those narrow cobblestone streets was not too pleasant. Now do take an access route. How easy is it to get to your accommodation from the airport? Is there a taxi there? Or are you going to rely on your gut feeling (which, if you’re like me, is doubtful)?

Riad vs. Hotel: What’s Your Vibe in Marrakech accommodation?

One major thing is ideally that, riads would be traditional Moroccan houses or even courthouses having within them a kind of feeling or sensuality one feels when they come back home after a long day and just feel like throwing down their backpacks with no regard to arranging. All very nice small American family establishments running privately but they could as well be pretty rustic. I mean, hotels can boast modern facilities such as air conditioning, swimming pools, room servicing, etc.

the gorgeous riads

As for me, why should I embrace riad charm? After maybe two nights spent in the place, I start craving the little golden nuggets of raiding, especially in the summertime where, in addition to a good air conditioner, I would say that comfort does not necessarily mean luxury. Don’t shy away from asking the age of the air conditioning unit; the older units do not have what it takes to keep up with Marrakech heat anymore.

Think about what’s important to you. Do you want a personalized experience, where the owner knows your name and serves you breakfast on the terrace? Or would you rather remain anonymous and just enjoy the convenience of a hotel? No one is right or wrong with these choices. It’s all about what suits your travel style. Amenities: The Little Things That Make a Big Difference

Amenities are what we get down to. What are the necessary amenities for you? For me, having a good Wi-Fi connection is an absolute must-have. I have to be connected at all costs, even on a vacay. And, after a long day of vast explorations, a soft bed is non-negotiable-my rule.

Don’t make the assumption that all riads have air conditioning or heating. Confirm prior to booking, especially if you travel during summer or winter months. Ask about breakfast as well. Is it included? What type of breakfast? Just a simple continental one? Or a traditional Moroccan feast?

My experience once was that I stayed in a riad, claiming to have a “roof-top terrace.” Poetic, isn’t it? What “they” did not mention was that the whole terrace is a small non-shaded platform, right above a construction site. Not exactly the private oasis I envisioned. So never shy away from specifics.

Trust the Crowd for Reviews and Recommendations

Before you book anything, do your research. Read reviews from other travelers. See what they have to say about the location, the service, and the amenities. Look for patterns. If multiple people complain about the same thing, it’s probably a red flag.

Don’t just rely on the reviews on the booking website. Check out independent review sites and travel forums. Ask for recommendations from friends or family who have been to Marrakech. Word of mouth can be a powerful tool.

I’ve found that many times people will leave a review based on one bad experience, so it is important to read several reviews to get a good idea of the accommodation in Marrakech.

Finding the Sweet Spot in Your Budget

Marrakech has an accommodation option for all; from budget hostels to high-end five-star hotels, this city is meant for all pockets. Well, cheap is not necessarily best, and then again, just because it is expensive does not mean it is top quality.

Settle on your budget and stick to it. Don’t get all swayed by colors and manipulated by persuasive sales pitch photos. Is what you’re getting worth the money? Do more amenities equal more price? Is the place nice?

Well, you’re not gonna spend all your time in your room. This is an exploratory city-Marrakech begs to be discovered. So save some fingers of your budget to those nice-tagines, those colorful souks, and those unforgettable experiences-crisp and clear.

Final thoughts

Marrakech is a puzzle of beautiful contrasts. Where the old traditions and modern life meet, where chaos and beauty coexist, is where there is the perfect accommodation. “Finding the right accommodation is but a piece of the jigsaw.

However, it is an important piece one should not overlook. Don’t be afraid to embrace the chaos. Lose oneself in the souks, experiment with new foods, and meet new people. And when you’re ready to unwind, you’ll have a comfortable and welcoming place to call home. Travels indeed broaden the mind, and Marrakech will widen yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is location crucial when choosing Marrakech accommodation?

Your location will dictate your experience. The Medina offers traditional riads and auto market chaos, although it can be a little overwhelming. Also, Gueliz or Hivernage have a calmer, modern vibe with wider boulevards and are easier to navigate. Ask yourself if you want to immerse in the chaotic old city or have a calm, comfortable place to sleep and live.

What’s the key difference between a riad and a hotel stay?

A riad gives you a more personal and localized culinary experience as well as a cultural experience, as Moroccan culture is based on hospitality, and hospitality is ingrained within Moroccan homes. Riad amenities may be more limited than a hotel, but you will be in a Moroccan family home, which should feel much more natural and personal than a hotel.  A hotel has its conveniences and amenities like air-conditioning, planned facilities like pools, on-site restaurants, room service, and so forth. If you want charm, flavors, and ambiance, you will prefer a local riad with few modern amenities. If you want predictability with comfort, convenience, and amenities, then a hotel is better suited for you.

What essential amenities should one confirm before booking Marrakech accommodation?

You should always confirm the essentials like reliable wifi, heating/AC (based on the season you are visiting), and breakfast details (whether it’s included, continental, or a feast). Ask questions not just about amenities, as photos do not always give away the truest experience possible. If the site says something like “rooftop terrace,” make sure to ask about questions around it, such as location and if they have a decent view; the last thing you want is an uninspired “rooftop terrace.”

How important are reviews and recommendations for choosing accommodation?

Check reviews from many sources (not just booking sites) to get a feel of the location, service, and facilities. Look out for comments that refer to the same issues/problems or praises. Word of mouth from friends and family who have visited Marrakech is also a powerful form of information in both markets to help find convenient lodgings.

How should one approach budgeting for accommodation in Marrakech?

Marrakech has accommodation for all budgets, including hostels and hotels in the luxury category. It is best to set a budget and keep to it while focusing on value rather than price. Remember, the accommodation is one part of a trip; you will want to set aside plenty of funds for exploring the city, eating at local places, and hopefully some memorable activities.
