Jemaa el-Fnaa Square Market: What to Buy & How to Navigate It

jemaa el fnaa square market. what to buy

Are you visiting Marrakech? Don’t return until you see Jemaa el-Fnaa Square. Trust me you wont regret it.  It is a lively, colorful marketplace with so many activities for tourists. You will see snake charmers, storytellers, musicians, and vendors selling different things. The first time I entered Jemaa el-Fnaa, I felt  there was too much energy and a lot of activities.. It is one of the best and unforgettable experiences I had in Marrakech.

Visiting Jemaa for the first time? I will help with what you should buy from this market. And how to find your way in this Marrakech market square. My few tips will make your visit as smooth as possible.

What Makes Jemaa el-Fnaa So Special?

Before I tell you about the list of items to shop. Let;s find out what is so special and unique about this market. During the day, it’s a busy center of activity, but Jemaa el-Fna at night is when it truly comes alive. The whole vibe is changed into an open air festival. There will be food stalls lighting up the night. You will smell the aroma of grilled meat, fresh spices, and sweets in the air.

The interesting thing is it’s not just the food that attracts the crowd. The square acts as a meeting point of cultures, where old traditions meet modern tourism. You’ll see henna artists, fortune-tellers, herbalists and water sellers in colorful outfits.

What to Buy at Jemaa el-Fnaa Square Market

You might be thinking what’s worth buying in this marketplace in Marrakech. You’re not alone, a lot of people are confused about this because there are so many options. Here’s a list of my favorite items and why you should try squeezing them into your suitcase.

1. Spices and Herbal Remedies

Moroccan spices are the top ingredient used in the country’s cuisine. You can find a huge variety here. Saffron, cumin, turmeric, and ras el hanout (a mixture of several spices) are the ones you can’t miss. Find the spice displays in pyramid shape. They have a great smell and are instagram worthy.

When I visited the square I got an black soap infused with argan oil (savon noir) from a herbalist. And it turned out to be the best skincare product I’ve ever used. If you find it, grab it on my advice, it’s great for exfoliating skin!

2. Traditional Moroccan Lamps

Have you seen metal lamps in Moroccan houses in photos? You will see them everywhere in Jemaa el-Fnaa. They have different shapes and sizes, and are usually produced in factories. But you can find handcrafted lamps too, if you can dig a little more. These lamps can be used as souvenirs or decor of your drawing room.

3. Leather Goods

You will find good leather products here they’re beautiful and have high quality.  Add bags, belts and babouches (traditional Moroccan slippers) in your list. Try to bargain before you pay, it’s part of the experience in the Marrakah, you will enjoy it.

I liked a leather bag and I tried to bargain but the vendor wouldn’t lower his price, so I walked away. Later he was chasing me down the street offering a better price. Pro tip: patience pays off!

4. Moroccan Tea Sets and Glasses

Mint tea is  a part of culture, therefore you will find a variety of tea sets. These colorful tea sets and glasses will make perfect souvenirs. Find the tea sets with detailing in  silver for an authentic vibe.

5. Handmade Jewelry and Accessories

Jemaa el-Fnaa is also a center of beautiful Moroccan jewelry. It is inspired by berber people, including silver pieces, beaded necklaces, you can also find modern designs in the market. I got a ring for myself at half the price of the original asking after some serious negotiating.

6. Street Food (Yes, You Can Buy Food!)

Street food is not for your suitcase, but for your stomach. You simply can’t leave the market of Marrakech without trying the food. Freshly made orange juice, grilled kebabs, snail soup (if you’re feeling adventurous), and msemen (Moroccan pancakes) are some of the items you should try.

How to Navigate Jemaa el-Fnaa Without Losing Your Mind

Okay, now that I’ve helped you with the shopping list, let’s see how you can roam around easily. The Marrakech market square can feel like a confusing maze. Especially if you’re going there for the first time. You can make the most of it if you remember:

1. Timing Is Everything

If you want to shop in a peaceful environment, go in the daytime. At day you will find the Marrakech square less busy and a little quieter. However, if you don’t want to miss the magic of Jemaa el-Fna, visit at night and brace yourself for huge crowds and come empty stomach to enjoy the food.

2. Wear Comfortable Shoes

This might seem a simple thing, but I can’t emphasize enough. All the walking on the cobblestone streets can be tough on your feet. Therefore, no need to wear fancy sandals instead get yourself comfy sneakers to enjoy the walk.

3. Start with a Plan (But Be Flexible)

Before you actually start roaming, make a list of items and activities you want to do. This doesn’t mean that you can’t add anything to your list, be flexible and add it if something catches your eye. Some of my best things I found were from stalls I bumped into unintentionally.

4. Master the Art of Bargaining

Bargaining is a part of experience at the square. And honestly, it’s fun once you know how to do it effectively. You can start by offering half the price a vendor originally asked and then you can increase it as per the situation. Vendors usually inflate prices for tourists, so don’t feel bad about negotiating.

I overpaid for a set of tea glasses because I didn’t know about this negotiation trick. Lesson learned: it’s not rude—it’s tradition.

5. Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

With a lot of fun activities you will also find a few things that need your attention. The square is full of pickpockets, so you need to be alert and keep your belongings secure. A crossbody bag with a zip on it is a good option to keep your cash safe. Don’t take big backpacks with you backpacks. You will find it difficult to navigate in tight spaces and they can make you a target of pocket pickers.

6. Bring Small Bills

Most of the time vendors don’t have change for large bills. For the best experience you can carry small bills and coins. It will save you from overpaying or leaving an item due to no change and will make smoother and quicker transactions.

Insider Tips for Visiting Jemaa el-Fnaa

  • Don’t Get Too Attached to Google Maps: Don’t trust everything Google maps says. The square is jumbled, and GPS isn’t always right about the locations. If you get lost (and you probably will), just go with the flow.
  • Try the Rooftop Cafes: Once you’re done with the shopping, go to the rooftop cafes of  the square. Watching the chaos from the top while enjoying tea is a unique experience.
  • Engage with the Locals:Chatting with tourists is one of the favorite things of vendors or local performers. A light conversation can also help you with a better deal.

Final Thoughts

Roaming in Jemaa el-Fnaa Square may seem exhausting or difficult at first. But it’s an experience you’ll always remember. The views, sounds, and smells of this marketplace in Marrakech will remain with you even after you leave the country. The square has something to offer  to everyone visiting, some like spices, others want to enjoy street food, some simply want to soak up the lively  atmosphere.

So, collect your bargaining skills with your belongings and adventurous spirit. Also take up some patience and you’re ready to explore the square. And if you end up getting lost in the web of stalls, just remember: that’s part of the magic of Marrakech.
